Serenity Cookies from Sweet Magnolias

Are you hooked on the Netflix series Sweet Magnolias based on the Sweet Magnolias novels by Sherryl Woods? It’s a wonderful feel good, Hallmark like show about 3 girlfriends in the town of Serenity. In season 3, Noreen Fitzgibbons makes cookies and delivers them to different people in the town who helped her out when she had her baby. She said it was an old family recipe. In typical FB fashion, after watching that particular show, the recipe showed up on my feed. I felt like I had to make them!

It is an interesting recipe since you brown your butter. I’ve seen lots of recipes that call for this, and I’ve read lots of reviews that say that after you use browned butter in your cookies, you’ll always use brown butter. What was different in this recipe from others I’ve read, is you brown most of the butter but leave out 4 tablespoons to add after it is browned. It took longer for my butter to brown than the 3 -4 minutes the recipe says. I didn’t want to turn up the heat, for fear of burning it. I even looked up how to brown butter while it was cooking to see what should it look like because I was concerned mine was not turning out. It was foaming as the recipe said, but I didn’t see it browning. All of a sudden, it happened. When it did, I could definitely tell – so be patient!

After it browned, I added the 4 more tablespoons of butter to melt.

After combining the butter with both the brown and white sugar, vanilla and almond extract, I added the egg and the egg yolk. This is where it got interesting as well. You mix for 30 seconds and then let rest for 3 minutes and you do this 3 times.

This is after the first time.

This is after the 3rd time! Doesn’t it look wonderful?

Like most cookies, you combine the dry ingredients in a separate bowl. This recipe calls for dry milk which is unusual to me in cookies. Also you add some allspice seasoning.

When you mix in the dry ingredients you have a wonderful, soft dough!

Mix in the dark chocolate and the walnuts. (I might try pecans next time as I love pecans with dark chocolate).

It calls for sprinkling the cookies with flakey sea salt. It was really good to do this!

Since they are called serenity cookies, I wanted to post a photo that looked like serenity! The cookies were amazing! Very decadent and everyone loved them! I will make them again for sure. I posted the photo of the recipe but also the link from where I got it. Enjoy!
