My grandpa owned the Dale Dairy Dell in Johnstown, Pennsylvania. He loved making ice cream sodas for us – and making sure we made them correctly – so that the ice cream did not crystalize!!! Every year on his birthday, and his anniversary of his entrance to heaven, we make ice cream sodas in his memory!
You start by adding about an 1/2 inch of chocolate syrup to the glass. Then you add about the same amount of milk. Stir to combine.

Then add your ice cream to the glass. My grandpa always made us chocolate sodas – because that was my grandma’s favorite. I usually do the same, but this time, I had 3 different kinds of ice cream in my freezer, so I thought I’d mix it up and use what I had. I made vanilla bean, mint chocolate chip and moose tracks sodas.

Next you pour in the club soda. You need to pour it down the side of the cup, and make sure you do not pour it directly onto the ice cream. This will prevent the ice cream from crystalizing.

Next you can add whipped cream and a cherry. I made my own whipped cream using whipping cream, vanilla and powdered sugar. We didn’t have cherries, and I forgot to drizzle it with chocolate – but everyone loved them so I guess it’s ok!
Serve with a straw and a spoon. Make sure you mix it up before taking a drink – you don’t want a mouthful of soda water – you want it mixed with the chocolate on the bottom and the ice cream – SOOOO YUMMY! Enjoy!
